Why I hate playing in my glasses.

I hate playing in my glasses b/c I cannot play in my glasses, not for real anyway. I have begun wearing my spectacular spectacles at all times now. I have to so that my exams for eye refraction surgery, aka Lasik, are not skewed. My employer-provided vision plan is impeding my liberation, but at least I have a vision plan.

Anyway -- My few attempts to play in my glasses have proven frustrating. My glasses tend to be "slidey" and my pudgy, stump of a nose tends to make them even slidier when I sweat. (Yes. I sweat. Ultimate playing women sweat. We don't "glow.") Pushing my glasses back up when they slide down is a reflex. Accordingly, my timing for one handed catches, all things jumping, etc. has been thrown off. It sucks. For all of my grumbling, whining and general surliness, I love playing ultimate. It's like oxygen. I want it. I need it. Damn VSP to Hell.

So, tell me you miss me. Tell me you love me. Just don't tell me it's been better without me.

Gaoltimate Warm Up

So.. this week, I am starting pickup a little early.. HOWEVER.. we are going to start with Goaltimate.. then at 1 oclock.. we are going to have regular pickup.
Why? becasue I like Goaltimate.. and I think it's a great warm up.. and we should use the kick ass present that Anne got Shamik for his birthday :)

Pick Up Thoughts

Ok.. due to tons and tons of variables, our pickup games (this goes for Tues/Thurs as well as Sunday) are frequently lower level than the players playing in them.
Why?
Is there something about Pickup that makes players play sloppily on purpose? Is sloppy play more fun? Is it due to lack of chemistry? Is it due to heckling? (you throw a completed dumb, nothing gets said.. you throw up a big 50/50 disc that resules in some great looking grab or D and everyone enjoys heckling the resulting play)
Just curious what folks thoughts are.. and if they are happy with it the way it is. (Or if they have suggestions for what we can do to make it better, as we have control over the Sunday pickup games.. and lesser over tu/th games, though we can help eachother make a difference.

Against my better judgment, I've been reading the rec.sport.disc's recent threads (over the last few months, not just Dave Klink's thread which seems to have some actual beneficial discussion. I'm still not all that psyched though about the underlying tone of some of those posts with regard to women in mixed.) on coed/mixed ultimate. Exercising even worse judgment, I read some blog called ultimatetalk.com. Guess what I found out:

The only players who get less respect from open players than women who play women's are the women players who play mixed/coed. In short, we suck. That's right. No exceptions. We all suck. If we didn't, we would be playing women's. We're weak. We can't throw. We're slow. We're defensively stupid. In short, we're a huge liability. We serve no purpose other than allowing a team to field a line of seven. If a team is less than successful, it's all our fault.

All I want to know is who the fuck these people who don't play real mixed (which I maintain is not the same as league mixed/coed by a long shot), or even stoop to watch mixed play at tournaments or talk to people who play club mixed, think they are.

Don't even get me started on their general disdain for mixed/coed club. They regard it on the whole as a joke that lowers club ultimate. Supposedly, most of our teams don't practice. Those teams which do practice are just running messy, disorganized scrimmages. Mixed players are out of shape, noncompetitive and just in it for the partay and bootay.

Entry Fee: BOOKS, for kids and young adults learning to read, preferably new but good condition used will be accepted (checks and $$$ also accepted for both Angel Fund and the Arlington literacy program we give to - just ask for details) We may ask for a little $ to defray costs also, so bring fiver$ just in case

Prize for the team that brings the most books (and maybe something for people who win games too)

Format TBD, but it will be one day and depending on the number of teams we may have to get funky

Location: Mall fields, next to the reflecting pool (that's in DC for you out of towners, see wafc.org for field locations)

Start time: EARLY - hey, don't blame me, blame those crazy Daylight Savings time people

We want at least 8 teams, but more can be accommodated so please rally your troops.

Will GW stay strong? Will another college program rise up on them?

Will the club players be able to keep up with the kids? How about some High Schoolers, are they 'busy with exams' too? Most importantly, will there be enough hot chili and cider?

WHAT IS DIM SUM?

Translated, dim sum means "heart's delight" or "touch the heart". Eaten for lunch or brunch, dim sum is a meal consisting generally of small dumplings, buns, and small appetizer-like dishes ordered à la carte. And, with the dim sum experience, you literally get your food à la carte, as small carts of food are pushed by your table and you select dishes as they pass by.

SIGNS OF AUTHENTICITY

Here are things to watch for to know that you are eating at an authentic (good prices and good food) dim sum restaurant:

The food is pushed around on carts as opposed to ordered from a list given to you. The exception to this would be high-end Chinese restaurants where they sometimes give you a list to order from.
The majority of the patrons are Chinese (minimum of 95%).
The restaurant is huge and noisy.
Pineapple chicken balls and sweet and sour anything are nowhere to be seen.
There are at least 40 tables in the restaurant and they are arranged in rows.
All of the tables are round.
The tables are covered in disposable plastic tablecloths.
The bathroom is not very clean.
There's a huge mob of people waiting to get in.

I may not seem it because I don’t know all the hot player names, the big teams, the cool gear (or is it schwag?), the most current label in wick fashion, the best 'D', the most affective 'O', the aerodynamics of the throw, the length of a field, the most opportune time to cut, the tastiest place for dim sum, or even the names of more than 50 persons in DC that play ultimate....but I DO KNOW how to waste 2 hours at dinner at an Irish pub with Bert (the boyfriend) talking about our fantasy ultimate teams.

I am sure yall have already done this a million times over for real, with real people who are really awesome as picks, real teams from outside the beltway, and real structure with rules and technology and grids and elimination and trading etc. However the hell those draft things works. Well this was my first time and it was a bundle of fun.

Yes we had our limitations. Neither of us has played that long, we were only allowed to pick players that we had actually played with on a team (including Rec, beach, or hat tournaments, but no pro or clique, so most of you are out), and we were drinking so are memory wasn't 100 % there even though it only needed to go back like a year and a half. The best criteria we had though was we had to create chemistry on the team and the people had to be fun. I have played with a lot of high-skilled players, but finding ones who you actually want to go out with afterward or even see on a rainy day was hard.

I share this with you to let you know that one day I hope to be able to talk the ultimate talk and walk the ultimate walk, maybe even huck the ultimate huck and cut the ultimate cut, but in the meantime I am having fun in my fantasy world and learning a hell of a lot about what makes a dream team.

Yikes...this started out so normal, and now I have completely cheesed out. I guess that is what dreary weather and cold days do...takes you right to pizza, the quesadillas, the baked brie, the wine and cheese, the 7 layer nachos, the grilled cheese and tomato soup (yum), and all other things cheesalicious.

I'm hoping we can continue to get good numbers for pickup, ideally if a few more BRDMers could show up we'd be able to play ulimate instead of goaltimate. Though I must say goaltimate was good stuff.

I'm going through real ultimate withdrawl. DABUT was fun, but come one beach ultimate is like the homerun derby of ultimate.

As i mentioned in too many words in my email. This is just the begining of what is going to be an amazing journey. As we take a team with loads of potential and alot of inexperience.. and build it into a jaugernaut. I have never been this happy at the end of a season.. becasue for the first time since I have been captaining.. I am already excited for the next year.
Each of my first years captaining.. regionals would end.. people would quietly drive away, and that was that.

NOT THIS TEAM.

We immediately went to dinner, had a blast.. were able to laugh at ourselves.. and are already excited about next year. As Jason/Henry a few others could tell you.. I'll take not holding seed with a team that I KNOW is going to be top 8 next year and is already excited about the prospect of proving it over going undefeated the first day of sectionals and having a team that wanted to "discuss play time" all the while being angry. (There is a long story there.. maybe i'll tell it sometime)
But siffice to say.. This team rocks.. my confidence in this team is higher RIGHT NOW than it has ever been. We are going to be great, we are going to finish MINIMUM top 8 at regionals next year.. and we are going to have more fun than ANYONE doing it.
Time for me to go buy me a BRDM hat so I can wear it proudly while training my ass off.

I moved here just a few months ago, and I wanted to find *a* team. Somewhere to play and get better. I already had a bunch of friends, making new ones was a benefit but certainly not a goal.

And then I bumped (quite randomly) into Paul at Poultry Days and he gave me his business card and told me about a team called Nasty. Sounded good, so I came out.

I needed this team more than I knew. I needed a place to be silly, and sincere. A place where I could get better learning from others. For the record that's one of my favorite things about this team, anyone on our team feels comfortable coming up to me and correcting a flawed cut, or suggestions a better approach.

I needed a place to play and people to play with. And that's what this is, it's play. And I use the word play in all its forms. A place where I could be nearly (or exactly) childlike for a few hours a week. I am so deeply grateful to the people who have made this team what it is. It's a good place for me, and for that I am thankful and fortunate.

So I have been playing around, reading RSD (which always makes me feel dirty), looking up head to head match ups on UPA score reporter and generally obsessing about regionals.

A couple of thoughts:

1. It's almost impossible for us to draw Bond in pool play. This is both a good and a bad thing. Good because they have beaten us. Bad because we don't get to beat them and really break seed.

2. There's a good chance we'll be errantly seeded below Animal and/or MAC, maybe even Germ Circus. I am absolutely confident we can beat Animal. We played them close when our offense had power of the House Democrats. Plus, that woman who threw for 5 of their scores, is off playing for Red Fish in SF. I don't know much about Germ Circus, but they seem about like us, play great some games, play poor others. All our games against common opponents come from Chesapeake where we played poorly. I'm guessing we can take them, though I'll let Jared talk about that. Finally this team MAC. I've never heard of them, but it seems like everyone has decided that they must be good because they play in Olio's section. Right, that's worth jack shit in my mind. Losing to a good team does not a good team make. So we'll just have to see.

My guess is that we get seeded something like 11, 12, or 13. If that's the case there are some teams that are none too happy. If your easiest game is supposed to be BRDM you are hating your draw. If we're supposed to be the worst team in your pool you're going to have a hard time making nationals, because so help me god, we will make you earn every point.

Play calls from stoppage

Irene's post reminds me that we should make more play calls off a stopped disc or non-fast-break turnover. That could help us get our offense started up. Even if the audible is "as called from the pull," that will remind people to get into our team offense.

[N.B. This is partially the "Megan in the kitchen" post again, but I figured that post is so old, no one would notice if I just posted a comment on that one. (Sorry Megan, that's the only part of the thread I remember.)]

But anyway, the real reason for calling plays is that it provides us with the opportunity for zany hijinks. Some examples from personal or 2nd-hand experience:

Play called is "hooked up with Lisa last week." Unfortunately, no one on the team knew that two guys on the field hooked up with Lisa last week.

Play called is "XYZ's boyfriend." I'd just dumped her a couple weeks ago. The thrower knew that. I dropped it.

Along the lines of a more "pre-engineered" sort of call, we clearly need a play like "sleeping with Chaz" (all ladies on the field cut long, then Chaz cuts under while the defense is stunned; the look is to Chaz of course :) or "implants" (last male in the stack cuts in). Discuss.

There is a fun tourney in Philly Area on November 5th/6th that I have signed BRDM up for. (And paid for already.)
However, I just heard that the first day of the clique tourney for some will be the 5th (with the second day being the 12th) Figures WAFC would try to take up 2 weekends..
So.. I need to know.. Do we have numbers for Pada? I am willing to skip the first day of the clique tourney for club, but are others?
If people could think about it, check with their captains, see if they would have enough without you, or even if your tourney is the same day as the B tourney day 1 and reply here.. that would be great.
I don't want our next tournament after Regionals to be next April, but I also don't want half our team to show up and have it impact peoples fun levels and such.

Hi Everyone,

A big thank you to everyone from me for all the help you gave me during the tournament. I could not have run it so smoothly were it not for you. Thank you also for understanding when I walked over to the tents grumbling under my breath, or when I needed to sit down for a minute instead of walking the sideline cheering.

Also great job playing to everyone, we looked like a solid, scary Big Red Death Machine! Hmm that sounds so much better than a solid, scary Wiki; ever think that team names actually choose the team, rather than the team choosing the name? Anyway Thank you again to everyone!

1st: apparently if you have a high school team you have to name yourselves something that suggests you are young...and that having sex with you would result in negative legal consequences. I for one am certain I'll be able to resist gawky high schoolers. John-O can you promise the same. I do expect them to hit on Charles, as they will believe him to be a long lost member of the High School Team.

2nd: Our pool is Gorilla Foot, Bond, and Jail Bait. I am a man who believes in the underdog, but I'm guessing Gorilla Foot can probably still beat us. But Bond is ripe for the upset. To beat Bond and break seed at Sectionals (especially one as tough as ours) would be pretty sweet. I'm making that my goal. I'm sadly starting to pace around my apartment just waiting to play them. I want to sky their really annoying guy (digs? or something like that, he irritates me, like tabasco contact solution, like poison ivy boxers, I'm saying the boy annoys me), and ideally on universe point. Fuckin eh, waiting till Saturday is going to suck.

3rd: Let's start chatting it up. Who is doing what? Who is getting the first layout D? A little sauciness never hurt anyone.

Left the Brickskeller knowing I had to work on Saturday.. expected to work from 10-2 or so on Saturday and have that be it...
Instead.. I got to work at 9:30 AM, and finally got off the computer, not done, at half past Midnight Saturday Night.
Got up at 6AM, back on a computer, where I remained until 5 oclock PM when I had to leave to get to the airport to fly to Chicago.. now in Chicago.. and just finished another 2 hours of work..
Wish I had been at practice instead!!!!!

This week: Tuesday at 6. (I won't be there) and Thursday at 6 (I will be there) for final walk through of stuff so we are ready for Sectionals on Saturday Morning.

Can't wait to see everyone and get on the field and off the damn computer!!!!!!!

so I've been thinking, we need more fans. We're playing sectionals a mere 20 miles from our homes and beds...and those of the folks who care about or love us.

I propose that we each try and convince a few folks to make the trek and watch some high level ultimate...and cheer us on while we debut the Big Red Death Machine in all its machine-y glory. Let's see if we can get some fans to accompany us to Sectionals.

Now, as I write this I realize that it'll be a hard sell, but that's what guilt and sexual favors are for.

ps. I will take the lead on this and will bug my friends, though almost none of them have cars and most are, frankly dead tired of listening to me talk about ultimate. But, ever one to put his money where his mouth is, I'll be bugging friends and acquaintances, co-workers and strangers about coming to see us. And I'm new to DC...y'all with a few years here should certainly be able to out recruit me.

The Hateful Printer, we almost used

So over the course of getting these jerseys I've been dealing with this printer that Alexia found. Since he was recommended by a union shop I thought I'd ask if he was a union printer. That's a perfectly reasonable question.

His initial response:
"No, I'm not union. But I charge more than union scale. How do you like me now?"

My response to him:
"If you can get our shirts done in time I'll love you like a brother. I was just curious. If you were union I was going to see about getting a union bug on the back...not a big deal, just curious."

Later after offering a quote that was 16 dollars per shirt higher than the Rockville quote I indicated that we would be using a different vendor. He'd suggested that I look for other vendors since the time crunch we were under was severe.

My email:
At your suggestion we've looked at other printers. we were not going to be able to get the shirts to you today, and therefore probably wouldn't get them in time for the tournament. We're going to go with a printer in Rockville who will be able to turn them around for us in time for Sectionals.

And then he goes crazy. This guy is a little unhinged, and certainly overly angry.
"Your welcome for wasting my time. Best wishes with the printer in Rockville. I'm certain you will not be satisfied with the end result. "Under Armour" polyester / elastane blend shirts are extremely difficult to image properly. Maybe that's why the UA logo is universally thermally imaged?

Also, have you ever seen any commercially available Under Armour polyester / elastane shirt screen printed? If not I wonder why?

The Great Jersey Fiasco

We decided the above was a decidedly easier endeavor than ordering jerseys for a coed ultimate team. But we are finally ready to go.

I ordered most of our jerseys from a scary place Alexia found called "Red Diamond Police Supply Inc" then had to call Under Armour to special order the rest of the women's jerseys with over night shipping. Then, after many stupid jokes involving unioned jersey printers versus non unioned printers, and with our printer finder off in Hyatt land in Chicago.. we finally found a printer in Rockville.
After all is said and done.. the prices of our jerseys wandered from "approximately 30 a shirt" to $42.50 a shirt, to $35 a shirt, to $50 a shirt.. and finally came to rest at around $32.50 or so a shirt (I will have final numbers once we know tax and such)

But after all that.. Aaron, Alexia and myself have decided.. if we ever do this again.. we are going through Gaia or VC Ultimate.. and making our lives ridiculously easier.

So.. we will have jerseys.. they will kick ass, and they will be here in time for sectionals (barely) so keep your fingers crossed.. and be prepared the morning of sectionals (maybe a little before) to hook me up with money.. as I am currently fronting us $1500 bucks or so.

Last note: when you see Aaron or Alexia.. give them a big thank you for helping me make this possible with their hard work.. while I tend to get a bunch of thankyous for fronting money and handlingmany organizational things.. these two stepped WAY up to make my life easier, and to help ensure that the team looks stylin for the fall series.

After a tough weekend emails flew back and forth today and people regrouped. We talked about offense, defense and the joy of playing with eachother.

Rob, Paul, Aaron and Libby met in the shadow of the Washington Monument to toss. Fortunately it was empty and we were able to toss for a while. Unfortunately at 7 the sprinklers come on and do so with some authority and force. After swapping ultimate stories and trick throws we retired to Cafe Asia.

The primary topic of discussion was BRDM's offense. Still not sure what's wrong with the offense, but everyone is certain it can be fixed. A good friend once said that "offense is about what you can do, defense is about what you're willing to do." We've demonstrated a willingness to play great D against strong teams. We haven't shown the same ability offensively, but we will.
